AF* day at AIS2024 was divided into two sessions:
Session 1: 10:00 – 14:00 AF* public meeting
Session 2: 15:00 – 18:00 AF* Open forum on AFRINIC
The Af* public meeting had:
- An opening Speech from RIPE Chair (Mirjam Kühne). Like during AIS2023, Mirjam shares her thoughts about the evolution of the ecosystem, the challenges and her vision for the future.
- Roll call and updates from Member’s organisations: AfNOG, AFREN, AfricaCERT, AfTLD, .Dot Africa, ISOC, ICANN, AfRegistrar, with two guests: Smart AFRICA and AfCHIX
- A presentation from Alain Aina on Distributed Governance (DG) Groups
- A panel Moderated by Lucky Masilela on harvesting all ongoing efforts for a better Digital Africa. Panelists were Smart Africa, ISOC, CDA(ICANN) and AFTLD
The session was moderated by Prof Nii Quaynor
The Af* Open Forum on AFRINIC had:
- A good will message from John Crain ( CTO ICANN)
- An address on the AFRINIC situation from Prof Nii Quaynor
- A Panel moderated by Dr Viv Padayatchy on AFRINIC update. Panelists were AFRINIC chairman and CoE board liaison. The Head of Member Services gave an update on AFRINIC Services.
- A session moderated by Alan Barrett on ICP-2 review. Herve Clement (ASO AC Chair) and Nick Nugent (ASO AC member) animated the session.
Some of the next steps are presented as below:
- Afrinic directors to propose formal Business Continuity/Disaster recovery plans
- Afrinic directors to explore options for appointing an interim Afrinic representative to the ASO AC.
- ASO AC to publish the principles document for ICP-2 revision in October.
- ASO AC to launch a community consultation on the ICP-2 principles document between October and November.
- RIR staff to send out a survey on the ICP-2 principles document to each of the 5 RIR communities.
- ASO AC to draft the actual ICP-2 v2 document after receiving community feedback.
- ASO AC to present the final draft of ICP-2 to ICANN for approval.
- Afrinic Board to consider appointing Saul Stein as an interim ASO AC member.
- ASO AC to ensure Afrinic community involvement in the ICP-2 revision process despite lack of official representation.
- ASO AC to coordinate with RIR communication teams to distribute the ICP-2 principles survey widely.
- Afrinic communications team to post ICP-2 survey information to relevant Afrinic mailing lists.
- Afrinic Board to provide regular updates to the community on ongoing legal matters and operations.
- Afrinic staff to implement policies that have reached consensus, including the RPKI policy.
- Afrinic to resume policy meetings and community engagement activities when possible.
- Community members to participate in the upcoming ICP-2 revision consultation process.

The plans should include designing a modern registry inline with the evolution of the RIR system and capable of caping with future challenges.
